"Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves" .....it's always been about control of trade...& fake money! Research the Gnomes of Zurich & "The City of London" et al....Who finances all the needless wars?
I would put Suez and Panama canals in a different category as they are man made routes. They have operating costs. They are attractive even with the cost of passage as the fuel costs and time savings justify the expense. If you don't want to pay, you can just go around the long way.
Having the ability to freely transit ocean routes is mandatory for a global economy. While I can see a good rationale for not having the sole power rest in the hands of one country with its own motivations, no other country stepped up and joined in the effort and just relied on the US to provide the service for free. The US was more than happy to fill that niche. It gave the US unprecedented global power.
Discounting the spectre of nuclear weapons, the US has become a completely unmatched military power. There is no country on earth that would fare any better in a military conflict than Iran has. Without the threat of nuclear retaliation, conflict with Russia and China would take longer but would have the same outcome.
Given the list of 193 countries recognized by the UN, I don't see any alternate countries that could be entrusted with that kind of power. I also don't see any with the wealth to afford it either.
Believe me everyone, if you love history, if you love economics or if you love finance you want to read Hidden Histories. The Collapse Team has researched and found examples of debacles that have, even though relatively unknown, had an effect upon the history of nations, and yes, the US is in there as well. It is a very gripping but also a quick read and you will want to read it again just to get straight the facts, so that you can look for them happening in the world today. I would say it is a MUST read so you can visualize how quickly our world can, and most likely will again, change.
