As systems and institutions falter all around us, it’s not too late to build the physical, mental, economic and spiritual resilience you’ll need to get through to the next phase.
I am very sympathetic to the collapse narrative, although I've just written a piece examining why the US has actually been remarkably stable through a lot of tumult, and there may be reasons to expect it to continue that way. Although all bets are off if true environmental tipping points are breached, or if the AIs run totally amok! https://tobyshandy.substack.com/p/american-society-is-incredibly-stable
Being right is not that hard. Timing is always the bear. I Don't think it will occur as steady erosion.
Think of it as the way storms and sea level will do their damage. They'll be some erosion and rising, but it will be a series of storms surges that are higher than ever before. Like Florida, et. al. At least that's what an esteemed ocean scientists told me about ocean level rise and coastal destruction.
I think it may also apply to infrastructural, social and economic collapse.
There have been smaller waves. 2008, covid, maga. For a leading indicator of collapse, I'm looking for the first big wave/storm. There will be some time, but perhaps not much. when the second wave comes it will be too late to prepare.
What will the big waves look like? Some combination of poly-crisis as others have discussed. The 1st (perhaps economic depression) one will shake up "western" countries as governments struggle to hold things together and lie to avoid panic.
Famine perhaps triggering the 2nd bringing regional war and a breakdown of global commerce. That one will lead to permanent reductions in output and when combine with the ongoing ecosystem degradation, it will destabilize the economic and social order permanently.
I've been seeing the signs since the 90s. I didn't say much about it except to our kids. One is adapting, one is not. 🤷♂️
Just ordered both paperbacks. (Kindle might be useless in a SHTF situation). I don't know if my reading science fiction helped me see, take it seriously, and psychologically prepare. It helped being raised in the Carribean, where things like water and power were/are less predictable.
We've been adjusting for some time now. Buying up nonperishables, useful books, etc. Some US society...security preparations...some basic gardening, water barrels for the garden, etc. We're seniors, so we're a bit more vulnerable in a small city. We own our home and have a generator hooked into city gas. We needed that recently after a big storm knocked out power for three days.
Darwin said the fittest were not the strongest, but the most adaptable to change. We're adapting as best we can.
It isn´t preparation. It´s adaptation. Adjustment. Seeing and realisation followed by action. The collapse is already well under way. To give just one example, compared to my parents time, whose peak career years were 1970´s - 1990´s, the jobs / career market today is absolutely and totally fucked. One parent in the 70s when we were kids earned enough in a graduate profession to support 2 children and partner, pay off a mortgage and run a car.

China will hold on longer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this coming more than 20 years ago!
Preparation is definitely key. For me the next step is jiu jitsu.
