> Maybe that’s the real tell: a serious civilization builds wealth by producing things; a nervous one starts betting on which part of the machinery breaks next.
An earlier tell is when financialization of the economy ascends. Economic wealth is useful production, not consumption nor units of currency. The financialization-dominated U.S. economy has been less productive than the dubious GDP and other metrics indicate.
How about the government use its authority to confiscate property and financial benefits from deadbeat parents... but first ensure equity between men and women in divorce courts and paternity cases... the current laws are biased towards women at the expense of men's rights... It's practically to the point where men have no rights. JMO.
I can see lots of things to criticize Trump for (How about using his son-in-law for diplomatic missions rather than vetted diplomats? Of course I understand it when he is dealing with a diplomatic corps that still has some people who work tirelessly to thwart every action he makes.). Bringing the boom down on Iran isn't one of them. 50 years of conventional diplomacy has done nothing to better the situation. In fact, it only made things worse. For all their bluster, Iran has nothing left to bargain with. The longer they hold out, the longer it will take them to rebuild. Some things will probably never recover as it is. I have little faith in "unnamed sources" from NBC. They don't have a very stellar history of truthful and unbiased reporting. Two uncorroborated anonymous sources are not exactly the gold standard for journalism.
While the right to interstate travel is considered a right, international travel is not. The problem with that is the fact that we have states and territories that are non-contiguous. To get to Alaska, for example, requires leaving the contiguous states and travel through either another country or through international waters. That means that the withholding of a passport restricts an enumerated right set out in the 14th Amendment to interstate travel.
