Musing as I'm remediating my current diet due to a Diverticulitis Flare.
And as a RN who delights in systems, I am going compare/contrast your wonderful question to our collective world gut health, but only briefly. And without gory details. There may be science terms.
How bad does the 'pain' in my gut get before I take action for change? Somewhere between dietary supplements and nutrient change versus serious health seeking medications and urgent care visits.
Most of us go along consuming what is convenient, plentiful , and lower cost without thought. There are better ways to live which take conscious effort, recommendation seeking, and layered nuances to activate. Most importantly, because of both our own and outside influences, the 'better' path is harder now. And feels almost insurmountable.
We all stroll merrily along, digesting what we think we want without awareness of consequences.
Or, a smaller pain will divert and motivate modification before the whole pathway explodes. A lot of people, through lower education and denial would say the pain is from an outside source. "Food poisoning" or "Food bug". As if they have no control of the inputs. They are unaware of the 50-70% occurrence in the population of 'weakness' with pockets of corruption in their 3 tiered alimentary course. They 'push' too much. Their 3 layered (*) pathways has been pressured and found supposed 'exits' . But these are stagnating 'pod' spaces.
Wait. Am I talking about the digestive system or our responses to climate change and oligarchy?
Hang in there.
It is only because of education and past experience that I recognize the cluster of symptoms saying 'one or two of your pockets' is causing generalized problems. The 3-6 days of drastic dietary change seems to be working but I know I have a 3-5 week regime to follow before returning to my favorite diet of fruits, nuts, complex roots veggies and garnished with protein.
But the rest of the world needs the same kind of experience and nursing to fix our behavior.
There is a lot of pain right now. There are plenty of 'perforations' and surgical actions needed. There will be intensive care for a huge number of sites. But the microbes always survive.
Anyone lucky enough to read your post is learning to understand the symptoms, hopefully taking action.
Earthside Nursing only asks the patient to do their best, listen, and start the first step with us. Your Households are adapting to the pain and can tolerate more.
I would ask where are they recognizing the symptoms and accepting they are causing the problems affecting themselves? This must happen before they adapt well enough and hopefully feel better while fixing themselves.
Did my simile work?

We are paying over $5.00 a gallon here in Northwest Washington (Bellingham). Diesel is around $7.00 a gallon. We do have a high tax on gasoline, I suppose if the gas tax was lower, maybe we could match some of those prices listed in the article. When people started buying electric vehicles they raised tax on gasoline to pay for the road repairs. I wish they would put the actual cost of road repairs caused by heavier ev's on the ev's. We are getting killed with the cost of gas here. I still have to get to work and the grocery store. And no, I can't afford to buy an electric car or ride a bike, I'm 75 and just getting by.
In Europe (which imports all it oil) of course fuel duties make up a larger proportion of the pump price and it's sold in liters rather than gallons. This means prices are less affected than in America and more scope exists to be able to rebalance what the driver pays.
What I'm waiting to see though is how much further the 'on delivery' price will rise as futures prices are quite decoupled by market manipulations.
I don't know that I believe the projections of increased cost. They generally assume that people will be driving the same amount and that isn't always true. People will minimize their driving as cost increases.
But these high prices are not driven by actual supply shortages but by speculation and the news cycle.
It's almost as if the average family couldn't afford the Chipboard McMansion, the 3 year German Auto Lease, and the 4 years of student loans for their liberal arts degree?? But it is $5/gallon gas that they can't afford and its going to ruin them? Let them complain, but do not dare point out the reality of their situation. They will hate you for it.
