I don't have a problem with the satellites themselves. Plotting courses through them is a simple task. The debris issue is fairly insignificant. Not even all of them coming down at once will reach the level of the meteor storms we regularly get. A large percentage of those point clouds in the graphics are tiny things.
The bigger issue is having critical infrastructure being vulnerable to both natural and man made dangers. Then there is the issue of having that infrastructure outside the legal jurisdiction of any government.
Already, I am pretty cynical in the belief that there are probably already conventional, nuclear, and dirty weapons inside some innocuous looking satellites that could be deployed with practically zero warning at both space and terrestrial targets. Without the need of a launch system, they can be really small. They don't even have to be particularly fast or accurate.
Even a large device could be written off as a natural like the Tunguska Event of 1908 that was the equivalent of 15 Megatons. That was the size of the Castle Bravo test that the device was about the size of a car with 1950's technology. Much smaller devices could target critical satellites just by getting relatively close and detonating so they just shred the satellites with debris.
There's also the fact that CME that cause geomagnetic storms destroy satellites like the StarLink cluster and each and every satellite that is destroyed is most likely replaced with US tax dollars. We had a Severe Geomagnetic Storm within the last two weeks. The Severe rating means there were most definitely destroyed low orbit Star Link satellites. Those satellites don't get to be deorbited into our atmosphere through age or poor design or space debris many of them are burnt up in our atmosphere by the many CME events that happen from the normal activity of our sun.
In February 2022, a Coronal Mass Ejection led to 38 commercial satellites being lost. Solar plasma from a geomagnetic storm heated the atmosphere, causing denser gases to expand into the satellites’ orbit, which increased atmospheric drag on the satellites and caused them to de-orbit. Johns Hopkins APL-led Center for Geospace Storms (CGS) is building a Multiscale Atmosphere-Geospace Environment (MAGE) supercomputer model to predict space weather. The physics-based MAGE simulation reproduced the storm-time atmospheric density enhancement much better than empirical or standalone ionosphere-thermosphere models, emphasizing the need for fully-coupled whole-of-geospace models for predicting space weather events.
I think we should keep in mind that this current resident in the Awful Office of the White/Gold House has been cutting off funds to NASA, NOAA and many other Agencies created to stay on top of global and national threats. He has ordered certain data collecting satellites (climate change/weather satellites) to be shut down. His masters want him to dismantle secular education, which on the not do distant past meant denying empirical evidence for evolution, etc. Who will have the knowledge to repair, create, investigate the problems of the near and far future and who will control those that have that knowledge?
