The whole escape to someplace cheaper and safer is a pipe dream.

Yes, you can go somewhere else and live "a bit" cheaper as long as you are willing to give things up. Food is almost all based on globally priced commodities. It costs about the same everywhere. You may choose to give up safely drinkable water, reliable sewer and garbage service, modern conveniences such as air-conditioning, and "fairly trustworthy" police and firefighters depending on where you choose.

That is not saying that the other places are necessarily bad, just they are not universally cheaper for a similar quality of life. Many end up costing much more once you consider everything as a whole. About the only area you will come out ahead in less developed countries is if you need household help or in-home nursing care.

Much of the military cost is “sunk” cost. A carrier group costs the same in the Mediterranean as the Gulf of America. The operation was still expensive but not to that level.

Actually, it's already on the way. I saw one smart phone that they have that as a big green button on the side that turns off all smart phone functions that you can turn off the distractions and go out and touch grass.

Personally, I don't have that problem. I don't have a smart phone and don't really intend to ever get one....
