The most important "prepping" is knowing what is important and how to do things yourself.
During the shutdowns, I would go to the store and see empty shelves but never had a problem with it. Most of the stuff that they were short on was stuff you don't need anyway. Lots of people don't know how to cook and what they were out of was the pre-prepared stuff. Basic staple ingredients were abundant. Even the famous toilet paper shortage. I just looked around and thought to myself, "Don't these people know how to use a washrag?"
The problem is that a lot of people already live precarious lives. To paraphrase Tyler Durden, they spend money they don't have on crap that they don't need. They are in debt up to their eyeballs. They go into debt to raise their credit scores so they can get even deeper in debt. Then they justify their spending by saying that they need and deserve it.
