In early April, the French city of Lyon filled with the familiar choreography of globalists getting busy. They’re well practiced, after all — international delegations sporting dark-colored suits, lanyards dangling, moving between conference halls, espresso bars, and breakout rooms. As always, the press releases were carefully timed and negotiated commitments were issued in polished language designed to reassure more than reveal.

Nothing about the One Health Summit seemed groundbreaking on the surface, although the World Health Organization described it as a “milestone.” But what seemed like a staid gabfest actually marked, at the end of those few days, the crossing of a significant threshold.

Put that thought on the back burner for one moment.

Two years ago, we wrote about three diseases that were being hyped by the global public health community as emerging concerns: bird flu, monkey pox, and rabbit fever.

It’s no coincidence that all three supposedly potentially deadly pandemics have animals attached to them and embedded right in their names. Turns out, the entire premise of the ‘One Health’ approach is that human health cannot be separated from animals or the environment. Diseases that threaten human life move across boundaries that can no longer be treated as fixed, the argument holds. Accordingly, there is a pressing need to give up autonomy to a global architecture that can coordinate responses in real time. In public health circles, this has become orthodoxy.

The Lyon meeting in April 2026 moved One Health from theory into infrastructure without any visible public outcry. In doing so, it has begun to reshape how authority itself is exercised.

Here’s how:

For many years in the international development sphere, One Health was an effective way of promoting the much-lauded but rarely attainable goal of coordination. It served as a way for global health agencies to speak to one another across technical silos — but that’s where it remained; the purview of boffins and development bureaucrats.

Lyon was very different. It was the first summit that brought together heads of state specifically around this framework. One Health graduated into the technocratic big leagues by throwing governmental weight behind the launch of a global institutional network, the alignment of hundreds of research bodies, and integrating once loose and disparate ideas into binding international agreements. All of this suggests the system is no longer a bridesmaid, but now a blushing bride — ring, veil and train.

If you’ve read this far in, you might be wondering why any of this matters. Isn’t coordination among technical agencies a good outcome? If these organizations exist, shouldn’t they be working together and sharing knowledge? Answering those questions is the precise point at which this story turns ugly. The graphic below is a hint.

Coordination, in isolation, is not controversial. No one objects to better communication between scientists, faster sharing of data, or a more coherent response to genuine outbreaks. But once coordination scales beyond information-sharing and starts to standardize how risk is defined and how responses are triggered, it’s not just technical coordination anymore — it starts to take on the characteristics of global governance.

That raises more fundamental questions: who gets to decide, on what basis, and how will it affect the rest of us? Just think back to COVID and you’ll see why these questions matter so much.

Revisiting our article from two years ago: Bird flu did not become a mass human pandemic. Monkey pox did not spiral into a global emergency. Tularemia (Rabbit fever) remains obscure enough that most people will never encounter it. Each of these so-called threats, on their own, seems manageable and even marginal.

But seen together — as the World Health Organization would like you to do — and placed under the banner of One Health, these pathogens serve a different and potentially dangerous purpose. They illustrate a world in which risk is all around us. No longer does a crisis emerge, peak, and recede. Now we have constant conditions that must be monitored, modeled, and managed across human populations, animal reservoirs, and environmental systems simultaneously. Naturally, it requires more surveillance, more control, and less individual freedom. Countries, states, or even municipalities that deviate from the coordinated response put the rest of the world at risk. Compliance with a global mechanism is what’s needed for the greater good, of course.

Continuous risk necessitates continuous surveillance. And, if surveillance is continuous, it must be standardized to be meaningful across borders. And if it is standardized across borders, then the authority to define what constitutes a “threat” and what response is warranted to that threat moves upward, away from local or national discretion and toward the unelected institutions filled with ‘experts’ that aggregate and interpret the data.

That’s what Lyon was about. It erected the scaffolding, laid the cornerstone, and has kicked off the rapid construction of global health control.

This is the quiet efficiency of technocratic systems. They do not need to compel compliance in overt ways if they can shape the conditions under which decisions are made. When policy is framed as the inevitable outcome of scientific consensus — when it is presented not as a choice, but as a necessity — the space for disagreement narrows without ever being explicitly closed.

So a meeting in Lyon you didn’t hear about is able to punch above its weight, expediting the convergence of health into a lever to shape your life, all based on the anticipation of a supposed ‘health emergency.’

And if you think this sounds far fetched, you must have been sleeping during COVID. That was the test run. The deeper story running beneath the surface is not Monkey pox, or Rabbit fever, or whatever other panic-worthy illness they can scare us with, but rather the system being built to manage the diseases — and you!

Not all that long ago, the Ukrainian flag ‘moment’ was a distinct, binary morality play you could perform from the comfort of your front porch.

Hang the blue and yellow colors and you signaled to the world your alignment with the ‘right side.’ You could move on with your day smugly. After all, there was no real cost, no real complexity, but a rather attractive splash of color and a quiet social statement: I stand with Ukraine.

Well, nothing is ever quite that simple, is it? It'll be interesting to see if people start putting up green and gold flags to signify their support for whatever 'Donnyland' is. According to the New York Times, Ukrainian negotiators have proposed lending President Donald Trump’s name to a 40-by-50 mile stretch along the northeastern section of Donetsk. All this in an effort to get the Trump administration’s support in pushing back against Russia’s territorial demands.

The Times writes:

That a name evocative of Disneyland has been applied to a depopulated, decimated swath of Ukrainian coal-and-steel country could appear jarring as Europe’s deadliest fighting since World War II continues to rage. But it also reflects a global reality in which governments appeal to Mr. Trump’s vanity in order to get American might on their side.

One Ukrainian negotiator apparently used ChatGPT to create a flag and a national anthem for Donnyland.

The dissonance is hard to miss. On one hand, a war is still grinding through what’s left of eastern Ukraine; on the other, there’s the creeping logic that power responds best to flattery, branding, and the promise of legacy baked into an AI-created flag. Somewhere between those poles, diplomacy starts looking like a licensing deal cooked up on Shark Tank. That’s got to be better than a Nobel Peace Prize, right?

According to a poll highlighted in The Telegraph, half of young Britons (aged 16–29) say they would “under no circumstances” go to war for the United Kingdom, while only 38% would consider it, “under some circumstances.”

That sounds shocking until you read the rest of the data, which is less about flags and more about math: collapsing expectations, stagnant wages, housing out of reach, and a growing belief that the system isn’t built for them. This is what a broken social contract looks like when it finally gets quantified.

For decades, the implicit deal was simple — you contribute, you comply, and in return, your life improves. Maybe not immediately, but over time. That belief alone carried entire generations through war, austerity, and upheaval. Now that belief is eroding in real time. The same poll shows the number of young people expecting a better life than their parents has nearly halved in a year – from 63% to just 36%.

So when someone asks, “Would you fight for your country?” what they’re really asking is: do you believe the current system is worth preserving? And increasingly, people are giving the simple response: no.

What’s striking in the data is the sentiments of young people tied directly to material conditions: housing inaccessibility, low wages, job insecurity, and anxiety about the impact of AI. Even the framing from the researchers reflects this. The director of the John Smith Centre, the source of the survey, put it bluntly: “why fight for a country that isn’t fighting for you?”

There are still signs of attachment to broader civic ideas. Majorities say respecting laws, speaking English, and holding citizenship matter for being “truly British,” and more than half believe immigration has improved their communities. But those views sit alongside a growing sense that the system itself is not delivering fair outcomes.

Taken together, the findings point less to a rejection of identity or responsibility, and more to a loss of confidence in the structures that are supposed to sustain them. Would it be a stretch to call this the early innings of collapse?

Maybe “fighting back” looks less like protesting, and more like opting out — one machine at a time.

That’s what leapt to mind when we read about what one Canadian company, Ursa Ag, is doing. It isn’t revolutionary in the loud, headline-grabbing sense. In fact, it’s almost boring: take a tractor with a Cummins 12-valve engine, strip out the electronics, make it repairable by anyone with a wrench and some common sense, and sell it for half the price of the End User License Agreement software-locked alternatives. No subscriptions, no diagnostic codes you need permission to read, no dealer monopoly on repairs… no brainer.

For years, farmers have been dragged into the same trap as everyone else — you don’t really own what you buy. Companies like John Deere turned tractors into rolling computers, where a sensor glitch can sideline a six-figure machine until an authorized technician shows up with a laptop and a bill. The fight over “right to repair” is rooted in fields where downtime means lost harvests.

So when a small Alberta-based outfit says, “here’s a tractor you can actually fix,” it’s less nostalgia and more countermeasure. A form of resistance that doesn’t ask permission, and sidesteps the system rather than trying to reform it.

We must recognize that large systems won’t get dismantled by tackling them head-on. The better strategy is to erode them at the edges. Find workarounds; choose older tech, simpler tools, parallel systems. This is how to restore a small amount of control. A tractor without electronics becomes a statement about who gets to decide when your work stops.

If enough people start trading convenience for control, maybe that will be what “fighting back” looks like for now. No flags or slogans… just less reliance and fewer points of failure.

The war in Iran has exposed the extreme fragility of the world’s food system because of the close link between petrochemical inputs and agricultural outputs.

Global leaders are warning about the possibility of severe food insecurity across much of the world. “Farmers are facing a dual cost shock,” warned Máximo Torero, Chief Economist of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization last month. “They have more expensive fertilizers alongside rising fuel costs affecting the entire agricultural value chain, including irrigation and transport.”

This is the precise moment alternative protein technology companies have been waiting for; a high-tech solution for food-insecure nations.

The framing is no longer subtle. The race is on to “control the supply chains and strategic industries that will shape the global food system of the 21st century,” according to Bruce Friedrich, founder of the Good Food Institute and author of Meat: How the Next Agricultural Revolution Will Transform Humanity’s Favorite Food―and Our Future.

He writes:

The corporations and governments that figure out how to make the meat that consumers love, but without all the wasted calories and extra stages of production, will take the lion’s share of a $2 trillion economic opportunity represented by global meat and seafood production.

Friedrich frames the global push primarily as a contest between the US and China.

However, an unexpected competitor — Israel — has emerged as a global leader in research and development of plant-based and fermentation-derived proteins, as well as cultivated/cell-based meats, dairy, eggs, and seafood.

In fact, Israel is second only to the United States in alt-protein startups and private investment globally, despite the country’s small size. Israel’s government treats alt proteins as both a national security and an economic imperative. A 2024 report forecasted that, with sustained support, Israel could reach 200+ alt-protein companies, a dozen manufacturing facilities, 10,000 jobs, and $2.5 billion in domestic economic contribution by 2030.

The logic behind this investment goes something like this: traditional livestock production is inefficient, requiring multiple units of feed, water, and land to produce a single unit of edible protein, while remaining exposed to disruptions in energy, climate, and trade. Alternative systems promise to compress that chain, reducing inputs while stabilizing output, theoretically insulating supply from the kind of volatility now visible in the Persian Gulf. In a world where shipping lanes can be contested and fertilizer flows interrupted, the appeal of a system that produces protein inside controlled environments, independent of geography, becomes obvious.

However, the same system that promises resilience also centralizes production, moving it away from distributed agricultural networks into capital- and energy-intensive facilities dependent on intellectual property and technical expertise. What appears as decentralization from land is, at a deeper level, a re-centralization around infrastructure that is more easily governed, regulated, and, ultimately, controlled.

But there is a deeper issue: at its core, this is not just a technological shift but a theological one.

Israel’s dominance in alternative proteins can be read as a modern echo of the ancient and recurring temptation to step beyond stewardship and into creation itself. While some rabbis have bestowed kosher certifications on these lab-grown concoctions, intervening at the cellular level to “create” flesh, milk, or protein is, in essence, playing God. Torah repeatedly warns that when mortals reach for divine creative power, the consequences are catastrophic. The very land promised as a divine gift is now the global hub for synthetic food systems. If Eden’s fruit brought expulsion, what does systemic remaking of creation portend?

Cultivated meat begins with harvesting an animal’s stem cells, then engineers their growth in bioreactors — essentially reprogramming life at the genetic/cellular level to bypass slaughter, breeding, and the divinely ordained dictate to “be fruitful and increase.”

In the story of the Tower of Babel, a hubristic people said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens, and make a name for ourselves.” They use advanced technology to defy previously known limits. YHWH responds: “now, they are not going to be withheld from doing whatever they plan to do” — then scatters them and confuses their language. The sin is collective arrogance using human ingenuity to rival divine order.

Israel’s alt-protein ecosystem, presented as the solution to global food shocks, can be seen as Babel 2.0. A cynic might even see the ongoing chaos in the Middle East as a clever device to break millennia-old agricultural systems that have served humanity and, instead, replace them wholesale. The ultimate goal? Drive all the business to a small tech cabal holding nutrition and starvation in the balance.

Henry Kissinger is often attributed as having said: “Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the people.”

YHWH alone created life; human “creation” is derivative, bounded, and prone to idolatry when that important distinction gets forgotten. Israel’s leadership in this space is, in a word, oxymoronic (if not ironic).

Scripture’s dire consequences for hubris — expulsion, flood, exile, scattering — serve as a warning, not a blueprint.

The finely choreographed moves of emergency room nurses grooving to the South African hit song, ‘Jerusalema’ should be permanently seared into your COVID-era brain.

Don’t you remember?

Hospitals were supposedly slammed with patients. Body bags were stacking up. And entire hospital campuses were so biohazardous, the need for personal protective equipment was akin to alien autopsy protocols.

Yet somehow, some way, hospital staffers in scrubs practiced and performed polished dance routines to what became the pandemic’s global anthem. The team at Collapse Life can’t listen to that song now without cringing; it’s probably the same for you.

The official line about dancing nurses on rooftops and in hospital wards was “morale boost,” a way to humanize the frontline heroes.

But as David A. Hughes has noted, the performances had a far darker undertone. Hughes correctly analyzed them as a form of mockery, a humiliation ritual designed to demoralize people by forcing them to witness, participate in, or accept something absurd, contradictory, degrading, or tone-deaf as a form of psychological control or display of power.

Now that we know what to look for, we’re starting to wonder whether a new form of psyop is emerging from this guy: Swisher3x. He’s the one who rolls into Walmarts across the country, cranks Mark Morrison’s ‘Return of the Mack,’ or some disco tune, and instantly sparks flash-mob dance parties in the aisles.

Random shoppers of all ages and backgrounds drop everything to join in, with big smiles and “Walmart vibes” everywhere. In one video, reminiscent of a 1980s televangelist schtick, one guy gets up from his mobility scooter to join in the dancing! The videos are blowing up on TikTok and Instagram, with some nearing 12 million views at last check.

We can’t help but wonder: Is someone funding and coordinating this? Or is it a Walmart skunkworks advertising and marketing effort?

If the dancing nurses were a way to humiliate the public by forcing them to watch joyful dancing while being told to panic and isolate, Swisher’s Walmart videos are humiliation ritual version 2.0… for the age of inflation. (Or maybe hyperinflation, if things keep going.)

Sky-high prices? Economic squeeze? Come on! Let’s groove in the aisles and have a good time! Look at the community joy and spontaneous happiness! Keep vibing, keep filling those carts. Rollback on aisle 8!

It’s the same “performative positivity during crisis” energy as the nurses, just with shopping carts swapped in for face shields and masks.

The thing is, when you know about ‘revelation of the method’, you can’t help but be on the lookout for it. Just have a read of some of the lyrics of ‘Return of the Mack,’ the song most often used in these ‘vibe videos’.

”I had to come again
And show you that I’d win
So, I’m back up in the game

Letting all the people know
That I’m back to run the show.”

In the end, these viral dances reveal a strangely efficient formula for turning everyday spaces into stages of manufactured uplift, whether amid health scares or exploding grocery bills. The ritual, if that’s what it is, keeps evolving, always one beat ahead of the latest collective headache, inviting the rest of us to groove along or at least wonder what the encore might look like.

The days of booking a last minute seat, throwing a few clothes in a carry-on and jetting off to the other side of the globe may be over — for good. “We are not going back to where we were,” said Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, last week.

Birol warned that Europe has “maybe six weeks or so” of remaining jet fuel supplies, and said flight cancellations could be coming “soon” if oil supplies remain blocked by the war in Iran.

Airlines are already cutting flights, trimming marginal routes, and passing on costs to passengers through higher fares and fuel surcharges, turning what used to be routine travel into a fragile, supply-constrained system.

At the same time, even if your flight still exists, simply holding a passport is no longer enough to guarantee entry. Increasingly complex rules — like the six-month passport validity requirement, proof of onward travel, visa waivers, and new biometric border systems — mean travelers can be denied boarding or entry over technicalities many don’t know about. In other words, the infrastructure of global mobility is tightening from both ends. Energy shocks — whether you believe they’re self-inflicted or carefully planned — are limiting where planes can go, and bureaucratic requirements are redefining who gets to move freely and who doesn’t.

Turns out freedom of movement was a glitch in the system, and now it’s quietly being ‘fixed.’

At a Pentagon briefing this week, War Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US military was “locked and loaded” to strike Iran’s power plants at the push of a button.

The only thing not fully loaded, it seems, are the meal trays of the servicemen and women expected to carry out those orders.

Photos from two frontline US warships — the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Tripoli — show trays that are paltry at best: a scoop of shredded meat and a pale, flaccid tortilla, or a few boiled carrots with a dry patty and a slab of gray protein. It’s almost as if the Soylent Green corporation secured the food service contract for these canteens!

Descriptions have emerged of sailors eating when they can, splitting portions when someone gets lucky, and watching supplies stretch thinner the longer deployments drag on.

The official line is that everything is fully stocked — 30+ days of food on board, no problem. But when the most sophisticated navy on earth starts looking like it’s running a rationing experiment in real time, it raises uncomfortable questions about sustainability, morale, and how long “best in the world” can run on cafeteria trays that look like an afterthought.

Nothing says ‘Make America Great Again’ like a superpower that can blockade a coastline but can’t provide those who serve with a healthy lunch.

Earlier this week, we looked at how American drivers are handling pain at the pump — they’re not driving less, they’re just stopping more often to put $20 in the tank. Think of it as budgetary sleight of hand.

It turns out folks are applying similar logic in the grocery aisle. The Wall Street Journal reports that affluent Americans are choosing to ‘reallocate’ instead of cutting back — substituting Aldi for Whole Foods, hitting the dollar store for household essentials — so that their conspicuous consumption habits… the skydiving, weekend splurges at the spa, and Instagram-worthy trips to Japan can stay intact.

From the WSJ story:

Joshua Halliburton, a 33-year-old who works in information security, started getting fed up with the prices at the Whole Foods near his apartment in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the past few years. When an Aldi opened across the street from his home in November, he was so excited for a cheaper grocery option that he attended the grand opening and received a piece of ribbon from the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

He now visits the discount chain nearly every day for household staples like cheese, eggs, yogurt and snacks. He is willing to wait in long checkout lines for lower prices. Meanwhile, he has continued to spend on travel, taking trips to California and Japan in the past year.

“Paying four dollars for a tub of yogurt feels right,” Halliburton said. “Ten dollars for a tub of Chobani just doesn’t make sense.”

In other words, they’re economizing on the boring stuff so the fun doesn’t have to stop. Seems like the $30 million free city-owned grocery store the Mayor of New York promised can’t open soon enough.

If there is any doubt we are in narrative warfare, this past week proved it beyond the shadow of a doubt.

The Speaker of Iran’s parliament, Dr. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, pointed out in a tweet on Friday that all of last week’s claims by the US President are essentially, bullsh*t.

As part of the narrative warfare (and psyop) we are witnessing, it’s the stealthy transfer of wealth that is perhaps the most troubling — from those who still believe the headlines and still trust their eyes, to those who know what is actually happening behind the scenes and are enjoying the ability to front run and take full advantage of their position.

That system feels a bit opaque because, quite frankly, it has worked quietly and unassumingly for decades. But what happens when it doesn’t?

In March 2025, Darren Watkins Jr. — better known to his 52 million (!) YouTube subscribers as IShowSpeed — stood on the Great Wall of China wearing a three-piece red floral suit inspired by traditional Chinese textiles.

“Guys, I’m about to be the first person to backflip off the Great Wall of China,” he yelled to the camera, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers. Tens of millions of people watched the livestream, and as he pulled off the stunt the chat exploded.

The next day, the Global Times, a daily tabloid produced by the Chinese Communist Party, extolled the 21-year-old American streamer’s visit. They said he delivered, “an unfiltered, vibrant glimpse into China's culture, modernity, and beauty,” and offered millions of global viewers, “a fresh perspective on the country.”

As footage of his 14-day tour of China began to circulate on the internet and rack up tens of millions of views, comments sections started to echo the same stunned refrain: Where’s all the dystopia?

“After watching this video, I realized how stupid my previous views on China were,” wrote a user by the name of yanlord. “I decided to plan a trip to China this year. I think if I don't go to China, I will regret it for the rest of my life.”

Watkins never spelled out the quiet part on camera, but the subtext was everywhere: China’s a great place to be. Efficiency—check! Fun—check! Modernity—check! Cool technology—check!

Influencers like this are Beijing’s most effective PR tools. Who needs tanks, tariffs, or cute pandas, when you can woo the world by selectively showcasing the best your nation has to offer and spreading the message through social media virality?

“I am so happy about Speed’s growth as a content creator,” fellow livestreamer Hasan Piker, wrote on X during the viral visit. “It’s amazing seeing him cut through the noise and show a side of China that is rarely ever seen by American eyes.”

Just eight months later, Piker rode the wave that Watkins created and took his own trip to China, which was (of course) also livestreamed. Both Piker and Watkins said their trips were self-funded, with no financial incentives from the Chinese government. Piker’s trip was more overtly political, but the format of raw livestreams, awe at the extent of Chinese infrastructure, and a “this place actually works” vibe was very much in the same genre.

What these trips, and others like them, achieve is more than viral entertainment. They work to actively rewrite the story of China that Americans know through the Tiananmen Square massacre, forced labor among the Uyghurs, the surveillance state, the social credit system, and more.

Pew research suggests that while most Americans still have negative views of China, the share with a favorable view has risen six percentage points since last year and nearly doubled since 2023. Younger Americans have more positive views of China than their older counterparts, with about a third of adults under 50 (34%) holding favorable opinions of China, compared to just 19% of those over 50.

By early 2026 the effect had a name: Chinamaxxing. On TikTok and Instagram, Gen Z users began posting videos of themselves “becoming Chinese” — drinking hot water for digestion, shuffling around in slippers, queuing for congee, even adopting the occasional floral quilted jacket. NPR, The New York Times, and CNN all ran explainers on the trend, noting it reflected not just curiosity about China but deep disillusionment with American hustle culture, crony capitalism, and political dysfunction.

This is soft power at work: shaping preferences without the need for coercion. Beijing didn’t need to buy influencers like Watkins and Piker outright. It simply made the country easy and photogenic to visit, amplified their best clips through state-sponsored media gaining them millions of new followers, and let the algorithm do the rest.

Decades of “China threat” messaging in the US created broad support for tariffs, tech export controls, military spending hikes, and alliances aimed at containing Beijing. This new wave of influence tourism subtly undercuts that by making confrontation feel hysterical, outdated, or even self-defeating.

When millions of young viewers see functioning cities, polite crowds, and futuristic convenience instead of the expected dystopian nightmare, the cognitive dissonance makes hawkish policies harder to sell.

Beijing may not be trying to turn Americans into card-carrying party members overnight; the real prize is far more pragmatic. This strategy erodes the domestic political will for a prolonged, expensive confrontation, and makes the US public more willing to accept a world where America is no longer the indispensable referee.

Normalizing China as a legitimate, high-functioning alternative shifts the narrative from “authoritarian menace” to “pragmatic competitor,” while the US is visibly overextended — polarized at home, burdened by debt, surrounded by crumbling infrastructure, and exhausted by decades of forever wars.

China’s strategy of “winning without fighting” exploits exactly that fatigue. It doesn’t need to match US carrier groups or win a hot war. It just needs to make enough Americans conclude that confrontation isn’t worth the cost — while quietly locking in economic dependencies, tech standards, and narrative dominance.

The influencer trips are the human face of that. Legitimate concerns about surveillance, censorship, or coercion still exist, but the content from these creators make those seem distant, abstract, or exaggerated.

On Sunday, Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Dr. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, taunted Americans on social media, after the US announced it would begin implementing a blockade of all maritime traffic entering Iranian ports.

“Enjoy the current pump figures,” he wrote, alongside a Google Maps screenshot showing gas prices near the White House. “With the so-called 'blockade', Soon you'll be nostalgic for $4–$5 gas.”

He then shared a cryptic equation, which market analysts and social media users took to mean that a compounding, non-linear price spike would result from increasing the severity of the Hormuz blockade.

Historically, $4.00 per gallon is the psychological tipping point where more than half of drivers report they would change their driving habits or lifestyle. We’re already past that point.

The national average for a gallon of gas is currently around $4.15, a 38% increase since the Iran war began. However, the pain is not distributed evenly: In Illinois and the Northeast, rates have already surged to $4.25+ per gallon. Prices in the South remain slightly lower, averaging $3.77 to $3.90, but are rising daily. For those driving transport trucks, the situation is even more dire, with diesel prices hitting as much as $5.68 per gallon.

The average household is projected to spend roughly $857 more on gasoline through the end of 2026 than previously forecast, according to the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research — a projection made when Brent crude was still expected to ease and the Strait of Hormuz to reopen in early April. Both assumptions now look fragile.

For households living paycheck to paycheck, even a $100 monthly increase can force immediate trade-offs: less food, fewer outings, postponed plans.

These are the early adjustments, the visible ones. What’s less visible is what isn’t happening.

Economists typically expect a lag — a period in which consumers experiment with small changes before making larger, permanent ones. But the early data from this latest spike suggests something different. Fuel transactions actually rose 9% in March, according to Upside, even as prices climbed.

“The impression that people would change their behavior because of high gas prices is right,” said Thomas Weinandy, Upside’s principal research economist. “But rather than buying less gas, consumers try to reduce the sting of huge totals at the pump by making smaller transactions more frequently.”

In other words, Americans are not driving less. They are paying more, and managing the shock in smaller increments.

In theory, high prices impose discipline — or, as the saying goes: 'The cure for high prices is high prices.' That’s because demand drops and the system begins to rebalance. But that mechanism depends on flexibility — the ability to drive less, to shorten commutes, to opt out. For many, that flexibility has quietly disappeared.

Over time, the structure of daily life has hardened around mobility: longer distances between home and work, more time idling in traffic, few (if any) transportation alternatives, and a geography that assumes constant movement. For most, driving is not optional — it’s a fixed condition of daily living.

So, when prices rise, budgets tighten elsewhere. Purchases are broken into smaller pieces in order to cope. The system absorbs the shock rather than releasing it, and the pressure builds. Inflation becomes more persistent because one of its natural brakes is no longer functioning. Household finances grow more brittle because essential costs are being met with less margin for error. The longer it continues, the less likely any eventual adjustment is to be gradual.

Seen through that lens, Ghalibaf’s post reads less like a taunt and more like a test — how much strain can the system take when the usual escape routes are no longer available? It seems like we may soon find out.

According to Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist and author, Americans are showing a growing willingness to identify with villains.

He points to examples like Oscar winner One Battle After Another and stage experiments like Luigi: The Musical, both tapping into an appetite to treat wrongdoing as something to understand — even excuse — rather than condemn. The crime hasn’t changed but the framing has.

In an opinion piece in The Hill, Alpert argues this is what happens when trust in institutions collapses. The system feels so rigged that the rebel starts to look like the only honest character left. Big, unfixable problems — healthcare, inequality, bureaucracy — get distilled into something simpler: a CEO, a billionaire, a public figure. Anger finds a face, moral lines blur, and “they had it coming” slips in through the side door.

The result is a culture that doesn’t openly endorse wrongdoing but keeps finding better reasons to understand it — until that understanding starts to feel a lot like permission.

Civilization doesn’t collapse because people forget right from wrong. But, it does begin to wobble when people default to excusing why wrong might be justified. Eventually, we land at wrong is right.

By all accounts, it seems Americans are cutting back everywhere, eating fewer dinners out, delaying big purchases, and pulling back on things like gym memberships. But $22 smoothies? Inexplicably, people are still lining up for these frosty treats.

According to two marketing professionals who wrote an opinion on the website The Conversation, this behavior isn’t a contradiction. It’s actually coping.

When people feel locked out of big decisions like housing, healthcare, insurance, and property taxes, they look for control in smaller ones. The professors call it “compensatory consumption.” Everyone else calls it splurging on a $22 drink to feel like you still have some personal agency.

What makes this moment different is the branding. Smoothies from Erewhon, the ultra-premium, certified organic grocery chain based in Los Angeles, aren’t just indulgences; they’re moral statements that signal you’re someone who cares about real ingredients, sustainability, and wellness.

Slurping one isn’t just a splurge, it’s a form of healing. Or so people think.

Plus, thanks to the magic of social media, you can turn it into a performative act that everyone can see — hashtags and all. Spending too much money on a designer handbag in these times might raise eyebrows, but downing a superfood smoothie signals how virtuous and disciplined you are.

Let’s call it what it is: economic theater. People feel worse, spend more carefully, but justify certain things more cleverly. So that $22 smoothie is all about buying a small, photogenic sense of control for social street cred, while everything else quietly slips out of reach.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow… nor your pension.

Nothing says “don’t worry, everything’s fine” like quietly skipping pension payments to “preserve liquidity.” The United States Postal Service has announced it will temporarily stop making employer contributions to the Federal Employees Retirement System — a move framed as routine cash conservation during a “severe financial crisis.”

Roughly $200 million every two weeks will now stay in USPS coffers, freeing up about $2.5 billion this fiscal year. Employees still contribute. Retirees are told there’s no “immediate” risk. And everyone is encouraged to focus on the word temporary, as if that word has a flawless track record in government finance.

(That word is almost as good as the Fed’s use of the word 'transitory’ for inflation.)

The logic is straightforward: better to keep the mail moving today than fully fund tomorrow’s obligations. Which is another way of saying the future just got repriced.

Pensions are only as solid as the cash flow behind them. And when liquidity gets tight, even the most “well-funded” systems start looking… flexible. Perhaps even fungible.

Maybe USPS retirees will be given the option of getting their pensions paid in ‘forever’ stamps.

You could be forgiven for thinking that makes the substance of this podcast outdated.

But it doesn’t.

What and discussed in this video was never about a single round of escalation or whether the fighting would end within days or weeks. It’s about the deeper structure driving those events — and that structure hasn’t changed.

What Moriarty lays out is not a crisis that resolves itself, but rather a system under strain from multiple directions at once. The real tension in this conversation is about timing — the gap between when systems begin to collapse and when people recognize they are collapsing.

The world still looks functional, and life continues with just enough normalcy to make it easy to dismiss the signals. But Moriarty warns we are living through a pivot point more consequential than any in centuries. Not because of any single event, but because of how many systems are moving at once, and how little margin for error remains.

Earlier this week, OpenAI released a 13-page report entitled, “Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age: Ideas to Keep People First,” outlining how governments should navigate the coming wave of AI disruption. The tone is not alarmist: change is coming, they say, but it can be managed. Workers will transition, systems will adapt, and innovation will continue.

Although it’s a policy paper laying out top-down solutions, the company makes all the right noises about involving the grassroots and soliciting public input.

The report says:

No one knows exactly how this transition will unfold. At OpenAI, we believe we should navigate it through a democratic process that gives people real power to shape the AI future they want, and prepare for a range of possible outcomes while building the capacity to adapt.

The AI future people want is one that doesn’t steal their livelihoods and leave them with no productive future. We know that because people are actually saying as much.

A new report from an enterprise AI agent firm called Writer, and research firm Workplace Intelligence, finds a significant share of employees are actively trying to sabotage their company’s AI rollout. The report surveyed 2,400 knowledge workers across the US, UK, and Europe. Half were C-suite executives and the other half were employees. Nearly one in three respondents admitted to sabotaging their company’s AI strategy, and among Gen Z workers that number jumps to as high as 44%.

Guests on the Collapse Life podcast often say eventually people will rise up and start protesting the ugly future being prepared for us. We wondered why it hadn’t happened already, but maybe we were just looking in the wrong place. People are not taking to the streets or organizing labor action. They’re just quietly ignoring AI systems, feeding them bad data, and deliberately undermining their outputs. So there may be reason for optimism after all.

Most AI policy rests on the simple assumption that adoption is inevitable. Once tools become efficient enough, organizations will deploy them, workers will adapt, and the system will move forward.

But that assumption depends on cooperation, which is a pretty fragile basis on which to build the future. And it’s clearly starting to fray. The same people tasked with implementing AI are the ones most exposed to its consequences, which creates a contradiction that policy papers tend to smooth over: the rollout depends on the active participation of people who may have no incentive to see it succeed.

Entry-level roles are already being compressed and a recent Goldman Sachs research study estimates that AI could automate 25% of all work tasks in the US within the next decade.

Tasks that once required teams now require tools. Companies are openly discussing leaner structures, fewer hires, and more automation. For younger workers just entering the system, the signal is hard to miss: rungs on the ladder they’re trying to climb to build a career or the prospect of some semblance of a life are disappearing before their eyes.

From that perspective, adoption looks like replacement, making the response instinctive. If the system you are being asked to build is the one that removes you from it, the rational response is to resist in whatever way possible. So, no matter how small the effort — a carelessly entered prompt, a poorly designed workflow — none of it dramatic, but rather friction-inducing.

Unlike previous waves of disruption, this one moves at a speed that leaves little room for adjustment. Steel workers in America’s Rust Belt saw their lives being eroded over decades. Now, an entry-level role can disappear in months. The timeline between “useful” and “obsolete” is accelerating. That impacts behavior: rather than looking for ways to adapt, they’re playing defense.

There is a tendency to frame this kind of resistance as fear — specifically, what’s now being called FOBO, the fear of becoming obsolete. But fear, in this case, reflects an understanding — sometimes clearer at the ground level than at the policy level — of what is actually happening.

Systems, no matter how advanced or “intelligent,” still depend on human inputs at critical points. Data has to be labeled. outputs have to be trusted, workflows have to be followed. If those inputs degrade — even slightly, even inconsistently — the system degrades with them.

The question is not whether AI will advance. Of course, it will. The question is whether the timeline being modeled — in policy papers, investor decks, and corporate strategy sessions — accounts for the simplest but perhaps most powerful variable in the system: people.

Individuals can make daily decisions about how much to comply, how much to engage, and how much to quietly resist. If enough of those decisions tilt in the same direction, something subtle but consequential could happen.

The future could arrive more slowly than expected, or not at all in the form it was designed.

Security expert has been making the rounds in mainstream media recently, discussing his theory of the , in which the initiator of a conflict is drawn into a more complex and protracted engagement than they originally bargained for.

According to Pape, the trap consists of several stages: stage one began with Israel and America’s initial attack on Iran, which achieved its goals tactically, but not strategically. When decapitation strikes did not lead to decisive victory, the aggressors doubled down and moved up a rung on the escalation ladder. Now Pape says we’re on the cusp of stage three, which is when the attackers begin to contemplate far riskier options.

It’s a clean framework, but it’s by no means new or novel.

What Pape is describing is a modern expression of something mapped out in the 1960s by Herman Kahn, an American nuclear strategist said to be the inspiration for Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove.

Kahn — founder of the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank — rose to prominence during the Cold War for his analysis of the consequences of nuclear conflict. His escalation ladder is a 44-rung framework articulated in his book On Escalation, in which he outlines the incremental steps a conflict can take from a diplomatic crisis to total nuclear war. It was designed to help policymakers understand and manage crises by identifying thresholds that could lead to catastrophe, allowing for managed escalation or de-escalation.

The premise was simple and deeply uncomfortable: no one starts a nuclear war. They arrive there, one rational step at a time.

Kahn’s model can be applied generally to how conflicts between powerful states behave once escalation begins. The actors, geography, and language can change, but the sequence does not. Once certain conditions are met, the process unfolds.

Pressure begins outside the battlefield — sanctions, economic isolation, political signaling, rungs 1 through 9 of Kahn’s ladder. Then comes an intensifying crisis, rungs 10 through 15, in which war becomes conceivable. On rungs 16 through 20, more direct confrontation begins, justified as necessary. That’s likely where we are now.

In the next phase, rungs 21 to 30, nuclear weapons would be introduced, but their use would remain limited and controlled — more for demonstration than outright destruction. In the penultimate phase, rungs 31 to 39, escalation begins to target civilian infrastructure and populations, and devastation increases. The last and final stage, rungs 40 to 44, involves uncontrolled nuclear exchanges and post-war consequences.

It’s both frightening and relevant. And we wonder, given the whack-a-doodle flailing at the presidential podium and on Truth Social, whether anyone in the general vicinity of the Oval Office actually knows about Kahn and his precise taxonomy.

Avoiding escalation requires restraint. That is, recognizing where you are on the ladder and choosing not to climb on to the next rung.

That’s what makes our current situation so utterly alarming. We are racing up the ladder, invoking scripture and prophecy at the expense of sanity.

Writing in the The New York Times this week, Pape described the conflict in blunt terms:

The Iran war is not a military conflict from which the United States can simply back out, with things reverting to how they were before. Iran would surely demand a heavy price in a new accommodation with the United States — but this price will surely be less costly than that of the alternative future. This is a transformational war, and if these changes continue for even a few years, the global order will change irrevocably.

That’s not the language of a contained conflict. Rather, it indicates we have already crossed a threshold, just like after 9/11, and the world we are entering looks very different than the one we once knew.

We tend to think of collapse as a logistical problem, with the solution being storing up enough food, water, tools, and weapons. All of that matters, of course, along with having a set of useful and practical skills and a supportive community.

But Selco’s stories, and our discussion today, point toward the idea that survival is ultimately decided by how quickly you can accept the idea that the rules have changed. In his experience, many people couldn’t make the switch.

In fact, one of the most consistent patterns he observed was that those who held on the longest to the idea that “things will go back to normal” were often the ones who struggled the most — or didn’t make it at all.

That’s not a practical failure. It’s a psychological one.

The professor who once held status and authority became irrelevant overnight, and fell to pieces. The systems that once validated his identity — job titles, credentials, institutions — vanished, and without them he felt useless, losing all hope.

The running tab on Operation Epic Burn Rate Fury is already somewhere between $16 and $23 billion, according to an analysis from the American Enterprise Institute. That bill includes damaged infrastructure, lost hardware, and repairs to assets like the USS Gerald R. Ford (which, in a twist no screenwriter would have dared pitch, experienced downtime due to a laundry fire. Man the Tide pods!)

According to Axios, damaged or destroyed materiel include: one Lockheed Martin F-35A costing about $85 million; one Boeing E-3 Sentry costing between $300 million and $500 million; and one RTX AN/TPY-2 radar, which typically costs between $300 million and over $1 billion per unit. The losses don’t stop there:

• Three Boeing F-15E Strike Eagles (roughly $90–$97 million per unit, per 2023–2024 estimates, with fully combat-ready configurations reaching up to $117 million)

• Multiple Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers (roughly $70–$80 million per unit)

• Multiple General Atomics MQ-9 Reapers (around $30-$32 million per unit, though some estimates range from $16 million to over $56 million, depending on the specific variant, sensor payload, and inclusion of ground control systems)

Then there are the human costs, which don’t fit neatly into an Axios graphic: thousands of civilians killed and injured in Iran and Israel, millions of people displaced across the region, more than a dozen US service members killed, and over 200 injured (although some reports suggest those official numbers may be significantly undercounted).

As American hero, Major General Smedley Butler, summed it up: “All wars are bankers’ wars.”

There is serious money to be made in bloodshed and broken infrastructure.

Which leads us to an uncomfortable question: if there is a genuine effort being made to end this war and save innocent lives on all sides, including military lives, why is there a concerted effort to assassinate anyone in Iranian leadership who appears open to de-escalation?

Among the most recent targets was former foreign minister, Kamal Kharazi. He’s not dead yet, but he’s pretty badly injured. And he was back-channelling through a Pakistani intermediator to Vice President JD Vance to try and negotiate some sort of ceasefire.

So it’s worth asking: cui bono? Who profits?

War is good for banks. It’s good for the Military Industrial Complex. And it’s great for governments, especially fiscally broke governments that need a unifying narrative and a reason to rally the public. It’s bad for pretty much everyone else.

Suffice it to say, somewhere, in some meeting room, the people with their hands on the levers of power (and marionette strings) have decided this particular gravy train isn’t supposed to stop.

A political party doesn’t always need policy platforms or campaign slogans to tell people what it stands for. Sometimes all it takes is a series of performative rituals to suck all the oxygen out of the room.

Just look at the widely circulating videos from the Canadian New Democratic Party’s leadership convention in Winnipeg last week.

Delegates were reportedly issued color-coded “equity cards,” each tied to a specific identity category — race, gender, sexuality, indigenous status — which could be used to move ahead in the speaking queue. In theory, the system was designed to ensure broader representation in debate. In practice, it seems to have turned identity into a kind of competitive sport.

At one point, competing claims between a “gender equity” card and a “race equity” card became the entire substance of an exchange. Elsewhere, a speaker drew applause for addressing foreign policy, stating Canada should not be drawn into the war in Iran, only to be reprimanded for misgendering the chairperson. You can’t make this stuff up!

On X, users dubbed the event the “oppression Olympics,” a sort of bureaucratic decathlon where the main event is competitive credentialing. Others called it a “clown show,” which feels like a tiny bit of an understatement.

And then there were literal “race card” jokes — because when you introduce actual, physical cards tied to identity, you’re not exactly leaving much room for subtlety.

God help us.

If there was ever any doubt that banksters rule the world, here’s your confirmation: Wall Street just had a banner year.

According to the New York State Comptroller:

Wall Street’s securities industry bonus pool reached a record $49.2 billion in 2025, up 9% from the previous year, while the average bonus rose 6% to $246,900, according to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s annual estimate. The increases reflect a rise of more than 30% in Wall Street’s profits, which totaled $65.1 billion in 2025.

Bankers make money gambling with other people’s money. For doing that, just the average Wall Street bonus is the equivalent of about four median American salaries — around $62,000 per year in 2025 — paid out in one shot, on top of an already generous base.

In a recent Collapse Life podcast, Peter Grandich talked about a “K-shaped” economy — where one segment of society rockets upward while the other slides in the opposite direction. The question most of us in the disappearing middle class are wondering is, how do we prevent ourselves from slipping onto the bottom arm of the ‘K’?

We talk about how ideas are introduced through popular media long before they’re implemented, how repetition makes the unfamiliar feel inevitable, and how narratives don’t just reflect reality but prepare us for it. Once you start looking for the signs, they become difficult to unsee.

The discussion helps explain how the framing works, because these ideas are rarely presented as something you’re meant to resist. Rather, they come across as compassionate, necessary, or maybe even inevitable: protect the children, defend public health, guard the future.

For most of our lives, the ocean has been invisible scaffolding of the global economy — vast, neutral, and governed by rules that everyone agrees to follow. Those rules ensure oil and goods can move freely, and ships can pass through narrow chokepoints without stopping to negotiate with whoever happens to live on shore.

That is a four hundred year tradition.

As we wrote about in the first chapter of our new book, Hidden Histories, the Dutch East India Company seized the Portuguese carrack Santa Catarina near Singapore in 1603. The cargo was so valuable that it stunned Europe — spices, silk, porcelain, the raw material of an emerging global economy. The problem was not the seizure itself; that was business, as it was practiced at the time.

The problem was legitimacy: on what basis does a private company capture a foreign ship in open water and call it lawful?

Enter a young legal genius, Hugo Grotius, who produced the answer Europe wanted to hear. In Mare Liberum, he argued that the sea could not be owned, that no nation had the right to exclude another from trade routes, and that navigation should be free.

It read like the birth of international law — and it was the groundwork for it — but it started as post-facto justification for a very profitable act of force.

The Dutch wanted to break the Portuguese monopoly over Asian trade routes and needed a framework that would turn disruption into doctrine. Freedom of the seas was a strategic argument that happened to align perfectly with Dutch commercial interests and naval capability.

Over time, that argument became embedded in the architecture of global trade, eventually becoming codified in frameworks like the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which formalized concepts like innocent passage through international straits. The idea was simple: chokepoints matter too much to be controlled by any one state. Ships must be allowed to pass.

Like all rules at sea, it came with an unspoken clause: someone has to enforce it.

After World War II, that someone was the United States.

US Navy aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, alliances with coastal states, and a willingness to intervene meant that oil could flow through the Strait of Hormuz without interruption. As we’ve all heard a million times these past few weeks, roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum liquids move through that narrow channel on any given day — a statistic that only works if the passage remains open.

Which it did for centuries. That is until the United States and Israel attacked Iran. What followed was a practical, perhaps even natural, response shaped by geography.

Iran does not control global trade, but it does control one side of a critical chokepoint. So it closed the Strait of Hormuz and suddenly ships started facing delays, restrictions, and demands for payment to ensure safe passage.

There is a tendency to describe this as a breakdown of the rules, but that assumes the rules were ever valid or independent of power.

Go back to the Santa Catarina. The seizure came first, the legal theory came later. Grotius didn’t prevent the act; he just explained it in a way that made it usable for the emerging order.

The United States did something similar, on a much larger scale, in the 20th century, enforcing freedom of navigation not as a neutral principle, but as a system aligned with its interests — a world in which trade flowed, allies benefited, and adversaries could be constrained through sanctions and control of financial and maritime infrastructure. This was the plumbing and support system of globalization.

That system is being unraveled and undone, but not in the way most people think.

Iran is doing something ancient — leveraging its position along a narrow passage to extract value and exert pressure. Chokepoints have always been contested; the Ottomans regulated the Bosphorus; Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal and briefly closed it; Panama has always been a managed gateway with rules and a price tag.

But those examples existed inside a world where the broader system still held.

This time it’s different. For a few decades, US naval dominance and a broadly aligned international system made the oceans feel open, not because they were inherently free, but because one power had both the reach and the incentive to keep them that way.

That arrangement is now being fundamentally dismantled, perhaps unintentionally (but likely not).

What Hormuz reveals is not just an old pattern resurfacing, but the beginning of a new order forming on top of it. One where the language of “free navigation” still exists, but where regional powers get to test the limits in real time. Part of that is ‘cost of passage’ — not free based on reciprocal or global understanding, but negotiated — or imposed — at the point of transit. Where friends pass through cheaply or even free, but foe must pay.

The old system hasn’t disappeared completely — vestiges definitely linger — but as of 2026, it no longer goes uncontested. Once a chokepoint becomes a toll booth, the implications don’t stay confined to a narrow strip of water in the Gulf, they ripple outward into energy markets, food prices, insurance, shipping routes, and political alliances.

Slowly, quietly, it also turns into a realization that the infrastructure that was once neutral is very much not.

The Dutch once captured a ship and then argued the sea belonged to everyone. For the last century, the United States enforced that idea at scale. Now, for the first time in a long time, someone is openly testing whether that was ever a good idea.

Walk into a pub or coffee shop in Britain today and there’s a good chance you’ll be greeted by a boxer or a bulldog, before you place your order at the bar.

That’s no exaggeration. There are 13.5 million dogs in the UK. Over a third of households own one. And the UK has normalized dogs in shared public spaces in a way the United States still hasn’t.

In Britain, dogs are so common in cafés, pubs, and even some shops, that it barely registers as noteworthy anymore. It’s baked into the social fabric. A pub without a dog feels slightly off, like something is missing. In fact, businesses actively court dog owners because they know it drives repeat visits and longer stays.

That’s probably why a BBC Wales story a few days ago is getting so much negative attention. “From puppacinos to doggy high tea - how dog friendly should we be?” the national broadcaster asks.

The framing makes it sound like a simple cultural check-in. But there’s more at play. On the surface, this seemingly innocent story follows a sad and now familiar pattern:

• Take a widely accepted norm.

• Introduce a small group that struggles with it.

• Frame that struggle as exclusion (or oppression?)

• Quietly shift the burden back onto the majority.

Here’s the crux of the BBC’s story:

From independent cafes to restaurants and shopping centres, an increasing amount of retailers are taking the leap in welcoming furry friends, including well-known brands Ikea, John Lewis, Zara, H&M and Lush.

But for those who may be allergic to dogs or live with cynophobia - the extreme fear of dogs or canines - they say the rise of dog-friendly spaces is a growing concern.

One woman with cynophobia, Abi Wilson, 20, said she felt “trapped” and now only goes out on “special occasions” due to the lack of dog-free zones.

This is Abi.

As soon as Abi thinks about leaving the house she starts feeling nauseated and on edge. “I can’t even step out the front door to go to the car without feeling sick and sweating,” she says. Because of her phobia, she only ventures out on special occasions and then only if she is absolutely sure that a place does not allow dogs.

While medical professionals estimate around 7% of people suffer from a specific phobia, extreme cases of fear of dogs such as Abi’s appear to be rare. In other words, we’re not talking about half the population locked out of public life because of the demands of a vocal few who like puppies. We’re talking about a small minority who are allergic to or afraid of dogs who are suddenly being positioned as the reason why a widespread behavior needs to be reconsidered.

Reader responses to the BBC story however, make it very clear where the real social tension lies.

A highly divisive sign appeared in an East London neighborhood just a few years back. Printed on a sheet of paper, the note read: “Do not walk your dog here! Muslims do not like dogs. This is an Islamic area now.”

In America, a prominent New York City pro-Palestine activist called dogs “unclean,” and suggested they should not be allowed as indoor pets. Just last month, Nerdeen Kiswani posted: “Finally, NYC is coming to Islam.” She later said the post was just a joke.

These moments — a tweet dismissed as a joke, a sign that caused outrage — aren’t evidence of cultural invasion, per se, but they are signals of a tension that has been creeping to the surface, even when the official conversation avoids naming it directly.

The story very quickly goes from comfort around dogs to competing worldviews. In a Western, secular context, people treat dogs as a member of the family — it’s a multi-billion dollar industry, in fact. Others however, would never allow a dog to cross their threshold. Of course, that’s not the whole story — but it’s a large part of it, and pretending it isn’t there doesn’t make the unfortunate tension go away.

Neither of these positions are new. What is new, and potentially concerning, is forcing them into the same tight urban spaces and pretending they’re minor differences in lifestyle choice — like choosing Coke versus Pepsi, or preferring coffee to tea.

In actual fact, it’s a question of boundaries; we all know that a boundary that keeps slipping is, in effect, no boundary at all. What looks like a debate about dogs is really a convergence of pressures:

• a majority behavior (dog ownership) that has become culturally embedded and embraced;

• a minority set of constraints (allergies, phobias) are translated into policy language under the guise of acceptance and compassion; and

• a more subtle undercurrent of differing worldview (dogs are family vs. dogs are unclean) is what is actually at stake.

Our technocratic system doesn’t resolve the tension, it manages it; softly, incrementally, often without stating what’s actually being negotiated. A country full of dog owners is asked, gently at first, to rethink where dogs belong. Then, soon after, it’s no longer about dogs. It’s about whose norms define the space, and who quietly has to adjust.

That’s the real headline. Dogs just marked the territory first.

We moved on from ‘Fiat Food’ to ‘The SHTF Anthology: Survival Lessons from the Balkan Wars’ by Selco Begovic.

Using Begovic’s account of life during the Balkan war in the 1990s as a grounding point, the conversation stripped away a lot of the comfortable assumptions people carry about “preparedness.” The idea you can simply stockpile your way through collapse started to unravel pretty quickly.

Yes, having food matters. A few weeks, maybe a few months, can buy you time. But beyond that, the limits start to show — storage space, spoilage, monotony, dependence on water and fuel, the simple reality that most people are not sitting on a three-year bunker of freeze-dried meals.

So the conversation shifted to what actually holds: cooking skills, understanding what your body actually needs (apparently fat matters more than people think), growing even small amounts of food.

But we recognized that even that has its limits: gardening is hard, storage is harder, and many people either can’t or won’t do it.
